For ages, film aficionados and fight fans alike have laughed at Van Damme, saying he’s “only a dancer” and not an actual fighter. I decided to read up on him and found out that such a label is DEAD WRONG. Believe it or not, Van Damme has an experienced karate background and sports an 18-1 fight record with 18 knockouts. Now, he hasn’t fought in a whopping 29 years, but we can’t say that he won’t know what he’s doing.
It’s fair to assume he has no ground game but that won’t matter in his upcoming fight, which is a K-1 Muay Thai match. His opponent is no slouch – former Olympic boxing gold medalist Somluck Kamsing. I can only assume Van Damme will be an underdog, but I my hat goes off to him. First he makes his best-ever movie, JCVD, now this? Good work, Jean-Claude.
Imagine a UFC match for JCVD? I’d love to see a kickboxing bout with…Cro Cop? Naw – Jean-Claude is too small. Maybe Martin Kampmann or Mike Swick would make sense.
